Don't starve is a unique survival game focusing on conquering an unrelenting wilderness through the use of magic and science. Don't Starve starts you off with a nice gentle introduction. You find yourself lost and abandoned on the floor of dark, dirty, eerie woods. With very little idea what is going on and why you are there. The game drops you right in at the deep end forcing you to learn quickly or risk dying. The game is very clear about your goal from the moment you read the title. Do. Not. Starve. That's what this all boils down to, ensuring you can gather enough supplies through the day so you have just enough to make it through the night alive. Then, you do it all over again. It's hard, confusing, and incredibly rewarding. While Don't Starve may sound like a lot to take in, especially given how mild and vague any semblance of a tutorial system is, it's reasonably easy to grasp after a little trial and error. Its user interface is simple and reasonably clear, Don't Starve offers you plenty of characters and options for how you want to play the game. Yes, the name of the game is survival. How you choose to survive, though, is entirely up to you. Don't Starve forces the player to use their common sense to craft, build, and survive this hostile environment. This may sound daunting, and it can be, yet there is a certain logic to the game that makes working things out reasonably straightforward and satisfying knowing you did it by yourself. Your focus on day one will likely be ensuring you have enough food and light to get you through the night. Night-time is scary, visibility is poor, and the woods are filled with unfriendly critters who you'd rather not meet. While you come to terms with your new surroundings you will find that trying to interact with every aspect of your environment is the best way to get a feel for what opportunities you have for the coming days. The world has a lot to offer. better food, clothes, ingredients, and most important weapons. While the desire to fight these terrifying beasts and monsters will likely be slim, the rewards may entice you enough to try and push the boundaries of your comfort. Don't Starve is an all-or-nothing game. If you push yourself too far in the pursuit of better loot, you may find that you end up overwhelmed and ultimately dying. This will force you to start from day one all over again. You take nothing with you from one life to the next, this certainly ups the stakes for players who have finally started to make some tangible progress. The only constant is that you, the player, are learning and improving. Each time you start a new game you will do slightly better than the last. This clean slate ensures the game is constantly different, rewarding, and high stakes. As well as a tad frustrating.
