Test your bravado against hordes of undead in this post-apocalyptic world, but this time using more brains than brawn. Whenever you hear about a post-apocalyptic zombie-killing game, you may immediately think of the typical shooter or action/adventure title. We've heard it all before, and the trope continues. However, it's rarer to find an actual strategy game with a zombie theme, which is what State of Survival: Zombie War essentially is. The concept is moderately interesting. The main idea here is to manage a survivor settlement and ensure... well... survival! (That's a no-brainer, right?) This is not exactly an original idea, though, and it could already remind you of State of Decay. For no other reason does this game get its name. Basically, it's a State of Decay rip-off with more emphasis on Clash of Clans-style strategy and less on action-oriented gameplay. Before we continue talking about gameplay, I need to clarify a couple of things, mainly because I already mentioned State of Decay and readers might be tempted to think that the experience in both games is the same. Well, it most certainly isn't the same. For one, State of Survival, unfortunately, does not have even close to similar graphical features. The differences are literally night and day, which is saying much considering that State of Decay is not precisely what you would call a "looker" to begin with. State of Survival is a mobile game, and you may already guess how it would fare next to a console/PC title. The comparison is, in reality, a bit unfair, especially considering that technically speaking these games are not even within the same genre, even if they share more or less the same premise. This is not to say that the game looks horrendous. For what it's set out to be, you shouldn't be asking for much else. Despite having been one of the most downloaded strategy games on the Apple App Store, this game is not touted as a AAA game by any stretch. I would've loved to see better character models during march attacks, though, as these are probably the worst I've seen in a game of this scope, even by mobile game standards. I understand marches are only supposed to show you visual representations of battles and not actual battles, but they shouldn't have to make the models look so lazily designed. I think I've seen far better character models in N64 or PSX games, and I wish I was exaggerating! In terms of the story, there's not much to talk about. A virus leaked from some lab and turned lots of people into zombies. I've seen far more original zombie stories in my lifetime, but I have the gut feeling that the people over at FunPlus International AG honestly planned to have you invested in the story, which shows in the way the dialogue is laid out and how the voice acting was produced. I admittedly skipped through the bulk of it, which is a shame since I possibly missed out on a lot of good stuff (I mean, you even have The Joker involved!) Alas, from the onset it looked like your generic Resident Evil/DayZ-type plot, and it failed to grasp me significantly.
