Description
A creepy puzzler that will torment your intelligence forevermore! The Room has been regarded, as of the time of writing this review, as one of the best puzzle games of this generation. Most of the praises are made for the design and atmosphere. Indeed, even people who are not fans of puzzle games would feel enticed to try it out, if only for the cool, dark, steampunk-style environment that the game immerses you in. Now, it should be stressed that this game is a puzzler through and through. We would have to wait for The Room Two in order to witness more fleshed-out gameplay with action-adventure elements thrown in. For the first game, Fireproof Games (the developer) opted for a more conservative approach. This game was originally released for Android and iOS, but it soon made its way to the PC with an enhanced interface and superior graphics and sounds. The visuals are very beautiful and realistic-looking (within limits, of course), and the 3D objects you interact with are immensely detailed. You could argue that, with the limited scope that this game has, it's very easy to pull off these kinds of graphics, but I'm not sure whether you'll find many puzzlers that look like this. The sound design in this game is nothing short of fantastic. It's highly atmospheric and doesn't bore you with repetitiveness in the same way many puzzlers do. It does get a bit louder as you progress, but never annoying. The puzzles themselves are very complex and elaborated without being overly frustrating. I never felt the need to engage in "random guessing". You will always find a hint somewhere, though it may not be as clearly spelled out at the beginning. In addition, there is a story of sorts, though it's not very in-your-face. You'll be uncovering lots of bizarre plot points and the overarching story gets creepier by the minute. The way all of this unfolded was pretty scary but amazingly achieved, and there is a very nice twist at the end that I will not be spoiling here, Just be prepared, because it gets ugly (in a good, entertaining way nonetheless). I cannot find many faults with this game. Perhaps it could have just been a bit longer, but it's understandable that this game was originally designed for mobile and had to therefore cope with storage limitations. The story is picked up in The Rooms Two and Three, which is why you'll greatly benefit from playing this game before trying out the others in the series. As of this writing, this game has a 4.8-star rating on the Google Play Store (with over 250k reviews). The same rating is displayed on the Apple App Store (with 5.5K reviews) and the complaints the developers received were very few and far between. Some people lamented that the camera controls were too restrictive in some places, or that there should have been a sync function to continue our progress on another device, but I frankly could live through those constraints.
